Officer sentenced in conspiracy to smuggle drugs into prison

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A former senior corrections officer who conspired to smuggle prescription painkillers into a New Jersey prison is now headed behind bars.

David Cade received a three-year sentence Friday. The 54-year-old Clayton man had pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit bribery in official matters.

Cade admitted conspiring with an inmate and a woman outside of the prison to smuggle in the drugs to the inmate. But authorities say the inmate was a confidential informant and the woman — who posed as his girlfriend — was a police officer.

Authorities say Cade met with the woman in April 2018 and she gave him $1,000 and approximately 50 pills to be smuggled into the prison, while he gave her other drugs. State Police arrested Cade immediately after that transaction,
