Minnesota United FC 1, Dynamo 0 Metanire’s goal holds up as offense foiled
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Romain Metanire scored in the 20th minute and Vito Mannone earned his fifth shutout of the season to help Minnesota United FC beat the Dynamo 1-0 on Saturday night in Major League Soccer.
Metanire scored on a strike from the right flank that deflected off Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia and looped into the goal with a bounce off the far post.
Metanire blocked Romell Quioto’s right-footed shot in the 22nd minute to help preserve the clean sheet for Minnesota (6-4-3). Mannone made saves in the 29th and 49th minutes. The Dynamo were held scoreless for the second time this season.
Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis made three saves.
The Dynamo (7-3-2) trailed 1-0 at halftime, marking the fifth time this season they trailed at intermission. They are 1-3-1 in those games.
Minnesota United created the first dangerous chance of the game when forward Darwin Quintero hit the crossbar in the sixth minute. Midfielder Ethan Finlay found Quintero at the near post. The Colombian international lifted the ball to set himself up for a whirling side volley that bounced off the top corner.
The Dynamo responded a minute later when Memo Rodriguez won space outside the penalty area by juking a defender, but his cross was handled by Mannone inside the box.
The Dynamo’s push for the first goal continued in the 15th minute after forward Mauro Manotas deflected a cross into the path of Quioto. His cross fell to midfielder Tomás Martinez at the edge of the box, but his shot missed the target. Rodriguez found Quioto outside the 6-yard box in the 21st minute, but his effort was blocked by a Minnesota defender.
The rebound fell to Dynamo captain and defender DaMarcus Beasley, who made his 200th start in Major League Soccer competition, but his shot was blocked and cleared by the backline.
Rodriguez’s cross in the 27th minute was cleared by Minnesota defender Brent Kallman and the rebound went to midfielder Matías Vera outside the box.
Vera created space for a shot, but his effort sailed over the bar and into the stands.
