Local surfers and bodyboarders hit the waves at Pawnee Plunge

August 2, 2018

In 2015 Pawnee Plunge added the FlowRider, which is the only one in the state of Nebraska, to give surfers and bodyboarders a local spot to showcase their skills, and in 2018 people are still coming to Columbus to ride the wave.

However, people who are interested in testing their surfing ability better hurry up as Pawnee Plunge is set to close on Aug 12.

According to the FlowRider website, the next closest FlowRider is in Cascade Falls Aquatic Center in Ankeny, Iowa.

The FlowRider helped boost profits as the summer after it was installed, profits jumped up 41 percent from the previous year.

There have been contests that have taken place on the FlowRider such as the ‘FlowRider National ProAm’ in August of 2017.

Before the competition, Pawnee Plunge had a FlowRider seminar on how to Flowboard.

As of right now, there are no scheduled competitions as Pawnee Park just got a new program coordinator, but according to Jill Bonk who was one of the supervisors on duty at the time there is a possibility of one in the future.

“It’s in the future maybe if it works out in our schedule, but we would definitely love to do something,” Bonk said.

Bonk said she even gets to use the FlowRider occasionally, and it’s the versatility, that makes it so enjoyable.

“I think you can do so many different things on it,” Bonk said “There are lots of different tricks”

Bonk also mention that it’s not too difficult to pick up on, and some kids have been surfing since the start of the season.

“A lot of those kids have been riding since the first day, so they’re like pros now by the end of the year,” Bonk. “Some of them are still brand new. We get new kids all the time that have never tried it before.”

According to Bonk this has been one of the best seasons, and while she wasn’t sure of the exact number, but believes that this is the third or fourth best season the park has had since they open in 2006.
