Donald Trump: ‘Congress -- Fix our insane immigration laws now’

July 5, 2018

President Trump called for immediate immigration reform Thursday, as Republicans in Congress struggle to consolidate on a comprehensive fix.

Mr. Trump defended enforcement officers working on the border, but criticized current policies as “insane.” He called for immigrants to be deported without a trial.

Congress made two attempts to pass comprehensive immigration reform in June, but neither passed the House.

As the debate rolled on in Capitol Hill, Mr. Trump went back and forth on how Republicans should proceed. He shared tweets calling for them to hold off until after midterms as well as urging lawmakers to pass legislation despite obstruction from Democrats.

Some lawmakers are looking toward passing narrow bills that chip away at problems in the immigration system by focusing on single-issue solutions.
