high school roundup Greenwich blanks Stamford

Seizing a three-goal halftime lead, the Greenwich High School field hockey team registered a 4-0 victory over Stamford in an FCIAC game held on Cardinal Stadium on Monday.

Senior Paige Finneran opened the scoring for the Cardinals, talling with 27:43 to to in the first half. Zoe Metalios, a senior made it 2-0 at the 15:45 mark. Jennifer Kelly, also a senior converted a cross ball from Finneran, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead with 10:12 remaining in the first half.

Sam Chabot, a senior sealed the scoring with 20:03 left to play.

“After our tough loss to Staples on Friday (a 2-1 defeat), we worked on finishing our opportunities and we did a good job of that today,” Cardinals coach Ally Orrico said. “We created a lot of opportunities and converted on some of them, which was good to see. I am definitely seeing an uptick in our play.”

Senior Abril-Martinez Arraya, senior Katie Walko and senior Georgia Imperatore paced the Cardinals’ solid defensive effort.

Greenwich hosts FCIAC foe Fairfield Ludlowe on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

SACRED HEART SOCCER

The Tigers posted a 2-0 win over Holy Child in their first FAA game of the season on Monday.

Junior Leah Atkins scored off a pass from junior Amelia Sheehan, putting Sacred Heart in front, 1-0, in the eighth minute.

The score remained the same until sophomore Fernanda Serna tallied off a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Sheehan drew the penalty kick when she was fouled in the box.

Megan Maloney made 10 saves in goal for the shutout.

“We had to grind out this win,” Sacred Heart coach Stuart Smith said. “Holy Child made it difficult for us, putting 10 players behind the ball. But we did a good job of coming out with the victory.”

Sacred Heart hosts neighborhood rival Greenwich Academy Wednesday at 4 p.m.
