Australians Dominate Surfing Event

December 5, 1997

SUNSET BEACH, Hawaii (AP) _ The Aussies rule at Sunset this year.

Australian Michael Rommelese won the Rip Curl World Cup of Surfing Thursday, the second jewel of the famed G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing, held annually along Oahu’s North Shore.

Rommelese won for only the second time in nine years on the pro tour, and won for the first time in Hawaii, making the best use of the 4- to 6-foot waves being churned up by windy conditions at Sunset Beach.

Fellow Australian Layne Beachley won the Quiksilver Roxy Pro, clinching the first Triple Crown championship organized for women.

Local boy Pancho Sanchez, who learned to surf at Sunset Beach, placed second. Australians Simon Law and Taj Burrow were third and fourth.

On the women’s side, Beachley beat out countrywomen Lynette MacKenzie and Kim Wooldridge, who placed second and fourth, respectively. Kauai native Rochelle Ballard was third.
