Four Killed in Accident at Championship Soccer Stadium
PALERMO, Sicily (AP) _ Metal supports collapsed today at a soccer stadium being prepared for 1990 World Cup matches, killing four construction workers and seriously injuring another, police said.
The accident occurred the day after top-ranking officials of the International Soccer Federation visited Palermo’s Favorita stadium on a routine inspection of World Cup stadiums.
Police said the workers were killed when a metal support structure collapsed while being laid on top of cement pillars.
The critically injured worker was rushed to a Palermo hospital.
An investigation was ordered to determine the cause of the collapse.
Workers have been installing better seating in World Cup stadiums.
The accident was expected to force suspension of work at the Palermo stadium. Other World Cup stadiums are in Turin, Milan and Rome.
