U.S., Sweden Clinch Medals in Curling

PAISLEY, Scotland (AP) _ The United States assured itself of a medal with a 10-7 victory over Canada, and Russia secured an Olympic berth at the World Women’s Curling Championship on Wednesday.

The United States also beat Norway 8-3 to improve to 9-1. Its only loss came to first-place Sweden on Tuesday.

Sweden, which also clinched a medal, built a 5-1 lead by the fifth end over Japan and then withstood a late surge to win 7-5 and remain the only unbeaten team (9-0). Earlier Wednesday, Sweden beat Scotland 8-7.

With Canada and Norway in third place with 7-3 records, Sweden and the United States secured places among the top two spots in the round-robin portion of the competition.

Russia (6-3) beat Finland 10-1 and China 5-4 to qualify for next year’s Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Canada easily defeated Italy 11-4 in the morning session, while Switzerland scored a convincing 12-4 win over Japan. Denmark beat China 8-7 in a game that took nearly four hours.
