2 Die in Nigeria Cult Clashes
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) _ Police have found the bodies of two Lagos students killed in a clash between members of rival university secret societies, a police spokesman said Monday.
The bodies were recovered Saturday from bushes near Lagos State University, Commissioner Sunday Aghedo told the News Agency of Nigeria.
The students were killed Friday when a fight broke out at a ceremony marking the start of the school term. Students from a group known as Aiye’s attacked members of the Black Ax society, scattering guests in panic.
Calm was restored only after riot police arrived and made several arrests, Aghedo said. It was not clear what had sparked the violence.
Violence between university secret societies is widely considered the most serious problem facing Africa’s largest university system.
The societies have been blamed for rapes, extortion, assaults and arson.
