Man who escaped Louisiana prison 15 years ago now in custody

September 25, 2018

CLINTON, La. (AP) — A man who escaped a Louisiana prison 15 years ago and fled to Mexico is now back in custody.

East Feliciana Sheriff Jeff Travis tells The Advocate that 44-year-old Lonnie Payne “truly and honestly wanted to be home.” Payne was booked Monday on the escape charge. Authorities say he escaped from a Clinton prison in 2003 while serving a 12-year sentence for burglary.

Payne was arrested last month when he crossed a checkpoint in Mexico and gave security officials a fake name. Travis says a few days passed before Payne gave the U.S. Consulate his real name, prompting his return to the United States.

He was brought to a jail in Texas before being transferred to Louisiana and taken to Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel.
