Andres Gomez Wins Citibank Tourney

March 1, 1998

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Fourth-seeded Andres Gomez defeated Guillermo Vilas 6-4, 6-4 Sunday in the Citibank senior tennis tournament at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

Gomez, 38, who plays doubles for Ecuador’s Davis Cup team, hit 19 winners to Vilas’ 16 and converted on two of his four break point opportunities. He also recorded a season-high 15 aces against only one double fault.

``I’ve been watching him (Vilas), and he’s been so aggressive,″ Gomez said. ``I knew I had to serve well and get a lot of first serves in to keep him from taking advantage and controlling all the points. I’ve been doing some work on my serve and it started to go really well. It’s good that the work I’ve done paid off.″

It was Gomez’s second senior tour victory of the 1997-98 Nuveen Tour season and established him as one of the favorites at this week’s Nuveen Master’s championship event in Naples.

The Citibank Champions is the last regular season stop on the 1997-98 Nuveen Tour.
