Discover Aiken: Savannah River Site home to legacy, technology and national defense

September 23, 2018

The Savannah River Site, a 310-square-mile high-tech swath cut through southern Aiken County, is both an area anchor and a scientific treasure.

The Site employs thousands of South Carolinians and Georgians and has multi-million-dollar impacts on the region’s economy year after year.

Around since the 1950s and first known as the Savannah River Plant, SRS is home to the Savannah River National Laboratory, a multi-pronged nuclear cleanup effort and enduring national defense missions.

SRS contractors repeatedly transcend safety milestones, with management and operations contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions most recently surpassing 15 million hours of injury-free work and Savannah River Remediation surpassing 30 million construction hours – about 20 years – without injury resulting in a lost day of work.
