Wizards, Earthquakes Tie 1-1
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Richard Mulrooney scored his first goal of the season in the 79th minute to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 1-1 tie with the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night.
Mulrooney scored with a left-footed shot from 18 yards away after being set up by Brian Mullan and Landon Donovan.
Kansas City’s Jose Burciaga Jr., opened the scoring in the final seconds of the first half with his first career goal. Chris Klein passed to a wide-open Burciaga, who fired a shot from 16 yards out into the upper-left corner of the goal.
Kansas City (6-4-4) took a one-point lead over Los Angeles in the Western Conference standings, while the Earthquakes (4-3-5) remained in third place.
San Jose had a pair of good scoring chances before tying it.
In the 65th minute, Mulrooney swung a corner kick toward the Kansas City net, and teammate Craig Waibel back-heeled a shot that goalkeeper Tony Meola saved.
San Jose had another strong chance in the 73rd minute, but Meola saved Dwayne De Rosario’s 17-yard shot.
