Calif. Population Keeps Growing
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ An estimated 582,000 people moved to California in 1997, the second straight year the state’s population rose after a five-year decline, state officials said Wednesday.
The country’s most populous state now has 33,252,000 residents, as of January, according to the state Department of Finance.
Los Angeles remains far and away the state’s largest county, with some 9.6 million residents. San Diego (2.8 million residents) was second and Orange (2.7 million) was third.
Kings County recorded the fastest percentage growth _ 5.2 percent _ while Los Angeles drew in the most newcomers (132,000).
Also for the second consecutive year, Los Angeles was the country’s No. 1 destination of people who moved last year, according to U-Haul, the moving company.
