Heavy rains close some streets along South Carolina coast

December 14, 2018

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Heavy rains have closed some streets near the South Carolina coast.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Charleston through midday Friday because of the heavy rains, causing problems given the city’s usual drainage problems.

The warning included the city, as well as North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and the islands nearby.

The weather service said more than 2.5 inches (6 centimeters) of rain had fallen since 4 a.m. Friday between Johns Island and northern Mount Pleasant. Nearly another inch (2.54 centimeters) of rain was possible by midday. But forecasters did say conditions were not expected to get significantly worse later Friday.

More than a dozen streets and roads were closed in the area.

The rainfall broke the daily record, 1.80 inches (4.6 centimeters) in 1977.
