BOSTON (AP) — Snow over southern New England is expected to be followed in eastern areas by freezing rain and rain in coastal areas overnight.

The National Weather Service says light snow will begin spreading across the area Saturday afternoon, and change to freezing rain as warmer air moves into a zone from Hartford to Boston and southeastward Saturday night.

Rain will be absorbed by the existing snowpack, putting more stress on roofs that haven't been cleared from earlier storms.

Snowfall up to 6 inches is expected in western and central Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut to around an inch on Cape Cod. Up to 4 inches is expected in eastern Massachusetts, southern Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Sub-zero temperatures across the area early Saturday are warming into the 20s and 30s before a new round of cold begins late Sunday.
