Iraqi Bishop Urges Cease-fire Resolution
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) _ The only Iraqi delegate at the World Council of Churches Assembly asked Tuesday for a resolution urging a cease-fire in the Gulf War without requiring an immediate Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait.
Metropolitan Mar Gewargis Sliwa of the Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church in Baghdad told a council debate that lasting peace could not be brought through war.
He said the council should use the proposed cease-fire resolution to stop the war and ″begin meaningful, trustful negotiations.″
The more than 800 delegates will vote next week on an executive committee resolution supporting a truce without Iraq necessarily withdrawing from Kuwait first.
The resolution faces Anglican opposition.
