Lake-Lehman Dominates En Route To Finals

LEHMAN TWP. — Zach Stuart summed up Lake-Lehman’s aggressiveness on the mat better than anyone sitting inside the team’s gymnasium Friday night.

“You have to want that six points. That’s what you work for,” the sophomore said.

The Black Knights definitely went after it.

Lehman racked up five pins in the first period, seven in the match, as the Wyoming Valley Conference’s top-seed rolled past Montrose, 64-18, in the semifinals of the District 2 Class 2A Team Duals Championship.

Up next for the Black Knights in today’s championship at Pittston Area is Tunkhannock, a 45-29 winner over Blue Ridge in the other semifinal. In the regular season, Lehman was a 43-33 victor over the Tigers.

“We had so many snow days. We haven’t had practice in like two weeks,” Lehman head coach JJ Konigus said. “The biggest thing was making sure the weight was under control. Our kids know how to wrestle. It was all about the weight. That was one of my biggest worries. Our kids really wrestled well tonight. We won’t change too much going into the championship. We will just come out and wrestle hard.”

It’s amazing how much confidence you gain with experience. Lake-Lehman is the perfect example of that. After starting a large group of underclassmen in 2018, the Black Knights are reaping the benefits one year later.

Just take a look at Friday’s results.

Out of the 19 contested bouts Lehman wrestled, the Black Knights picked up pins in 15 of them. And out of those 15, 11 were stopped in the opening period.

A pretty dominating night on the mats for the black and gold with bonus points in every match contested.

“Last year, you could see that there were some nerves coming in,” Lehman sophomore Jake Trumbower said. “There was no pressure at all this year. We just wanted to get after it. We practice hard every day to wrestle like we did today. That experience helps. You understand how important the warm-up is, and you know that you have to be ready from the start.”

For Montrose, the second seed out of the Lackawanna League, it was an eye-opening experience against one of the district’s best.

The Meteors, coming off a 48-30 quarterfinal win over Hanover Area, couldn’t find the same type of success against Lehman. The team got wins from Justin Kelly and Bryan Ryan, and earned another six on a forfeit to Joe Hester.

“Lake-Lehman is a real tough team,” Montrose head coach Matt Hawley said. “We put our best guys where we thought we could win with them, but there wasn’t much we could do. We told them that Lehman is a team that works hard to get where they are. And if we want to be that good, we have to figure some things out.”

After dominating Western Wayne 78-3 in the quarterfinals, Lehman didn’t let off the gas in the semifinals.

Stuart (126), Bob Long (132), Hunter Burke (145), Connor Morgan (152), Tim Schechterly (160), Trumbower (170) and Nick Zaboski (182) were all winners by fall. Mason Konigus build a 10-0 lead after two periods en route to a major decision. And the rest of the point came via three forfeits.

“Those first-year jitters are gone. You are more comfortable with it because you have been here before,” Stuart said.

In the consolation bout, Hanover Area got victories from Zach Murphy, Joe Rowley, Jared Banesh, DJ Erickson and Caden Schiel as the Hawkeyes edged out Western Wayne, 32-28, in a match where only seven weights had contested bouts.

Hanover is also back in action at Pittston Area today, facing off with Blue Ridge in the consolation semifinals, slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.

“We were flat in the first match, but we were able to bounce back,” Hawkeyes head coach Mike Griffith said. “We are starting to get healthy. We wrestled with six on Monday, and we finally got nine to weigh in today. But we lost one of our kids tonight, so we will see if he can go tomorrow. The injury bug has kind of been our bug-a-boo all year. We just have to get healthy.”
