LONDON (AP) _ Renowned actor Sir Alec Guinness, private and self-effacing in life, was remembered Friday by his family and close friends at a quiet funeral at his local church.

The service at St. Lawrence's Roman Catholic Church, in Petersfield, near Guinness's home 50 miles southwest of London, was ``very low key'' a family spokeswoman said. She added that at his request there would be no memorial service.

Guinness died Saturday at age 86 after a long illness. One of Britain's finest stage and film actors, he won an Oscar for best actor in the 1957 film ``Bridge On the River Kwai'' and a special Oscar in 1980 for his entire film career.

Guinness is survived by his wife of 62 years, Merula Salaman, and son Matthew.
