Doctors: 67-Year-Old Serbian Not Pregnant
LESKOVAC, Serbia-Montenegro (AP) _ Doctors say a 67-year-old Serbian woman, who claimed she was expecting her first baby, is not pregnant, a news agency reported Tuesday.
Zlatija Jovic, from Gornje Brijanje village in central Serbia, last week told a local television station that she expected to give birth in July _ raising the possibility of a record for her age.
But on Tuesday doctors examined Jovic and determined that she was not pregnant despite enlarged stomach and other symptoms of pregnancy, the private Beta news agency reported.
``The situation is clear, she is not pregnant,″ physician Dragan Todorovic, who examined Jovic, was quoted as saying. ``It is a fake pregnancy which is rare among (elderly) women. The symptoms of pregnancy were probably caused by her great desire to have children.″
Jovic was not available for comment, but the doctor said she was in shock after hearing the news, according to the report.
``She went silent for half an hour,″ Todorovic was quoted as saying. ``When she spoke, I could see she was fighting emotions.″
Jovic and her husband, Miodrag, 53, were hoping for a son, earlier media reports said.
The couple first married 30 years ago, but then divorced. Miodrag Jovic had two other marriages, and fathered a daughter, who has two children herself.
Zlatija Jovic remained single until remarrying Miodrag nine years ago.
In January, a 66-year-old woman in neighboring Romania became possibly the world’s oldest mother. But that case has been overshadowed by an ethics investigation into her obstetrician’s decision to perform in-vitro fertilization to enable the pregnancy.
