ORONO, Maine (AP) _ A scrambling Jim Murphy connected with Desmond Bellot for a 43-yard scoring pass to lift Northeastern to a 31-28 win over Maine Saturday in the Yankee Conference.

Maine’s Bobby Jameson fumbled on the next possession and two more Black Bear drives ended in interceptions of first-year quarterback Mickey Fein as the Huskies hung on for the victory.

Andre Pam led the Black Bears with 129 yards and three touchdowns, pushing him past the 1,000-yard mark for the season. But his fourth-quarter turnover set up the Huskies’ game-winning drive.

Northeastern (4-6, 2-6 Yankee Conference) returned the fumble for five yards and took possession at the Huskies 40.

Five plays later, Murphy was scrambling under heavy pressure when he spotted Bellot sneaking up the sideline. Brandon Hanes kicked the extra point for the final margin.

Maine (3-7, 1-7) took an early lead after Mark Hopkins fumbled on a hard hit on the opening kickoff. Maine’s Cody Tatro caught the fumble in mid-air and scored seven seconds into the game.

Brian Vaughan led Northeastern with 117 yards and a touchdown with 50 seconds left in the first half.

The Huskies took the lead 1:30 into the third quarter when Jeff Reale took a shovel pass and broke away for a 35-yard touchdown. Pam answered with scoring runs of 53 and 49 yards later in the quarter.
