EUGENE, Ore. (AP) _ John Conrad, sports editor at The Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene, Ore., died Tuesday of complications from a stroke. He was 57.
Conrad worked in the sports department of the Register-Guard for 33 years, starting as a reporter. He was named Oregon sportswriter of the year in 1982.
He was promoted to sports editor in 1984, while continuing to be the primary writer covering the Oregon men’s basketball team.
``This is a terribly sad day for all of us at the newspaper,″ said editor and publisher Tony Baker. ``John was one of those really good people, a consummate professional. He helped make our sports pages consistently top-notch, and he certainly made those around him better.″
Conrad played baseball at Oregon and graduated in 1967. He started working for the Register-Guard two years later.
Conrad suffered a stroke at his Springfield home on Sunday. At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
