Police Issue Warrant For Son Of Elderly Man Found Near Starvation

September 10, 1986

DALLAS (AP) _ A 72-year-old man was discovered in a soiled bed, covered with sores and insect bites and near starvation by neighbors who heard him shouting for food, police said.

The man’s son was named in a warrant Tuesday on charges of injury to an elderly person, and bond was set at $5,000, said police spokesman Bob Shaw. However, Albert Peterek Jr., 36, had not been located as of early today.

The elderly man, Albert Peterek, told police he had not eaten since he had a jelly sandwich last Wednesday, the day his son and a woman left the house.

″He just gave me one meal and he left,″ Peterek said.

He said his son had been preparing meals and paying bills, but last week the younger Peterek held a Bible over his head, threw it down and then left in a fit of anger.

″He just wanted to get rid of me and that I might die hungry and he wasn’t going to see me alive again,″ the elder Peterek said. ″If not for my neighbors, I would have starved to death.″

″He lifted the shade (on his window) and started hollering and saying he was starving,″ said Odell Duke, who along with Geneva Beckwith, found Peterek on Tuesday. ″He was laying in bed starving to death.″

Peterek, who suffers from diabetes, has had several strokes and is bedridden, Shaw said.

Peterek was transported to Southeast Methodist Hospital where he was undergoing tests, Shaw said.

Officer Richard Morrell said in his report that Peterek was lying in a soiled bed and was wearing dirty clothes.

Morrell reported the man had numerous sores and insect bites on the lower part of his body. The man’s room was hot, full of roaches and had a foul smell, the report said.
