Senior living facility, distribution center planned

November 20, 2018

A 94-bed senior living facility and a 404,160-square-foot distribution center are planned in Deer Park, and two businesses are relocating to the community, city economic development administrator Debbie Westbeld said.

Sodalis Senior Living will soon be under construction on East Boulevard at the southwest corner of the intersection at X Street. Sodalis will be a 94-bed facility that specializes in home-like memory care and assisted living for senior adults. The Texas-based company plans to break ground in early 2019. The 74,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in early 2020. Call 830-624-1044 for information or visit www.sodalissenior.com.

Underwood Port Logistics Center is building a 404,160-square-foot distribution center at 4600 Underwood (behind the Food Town grocery center at the intersection with Spencer Highway). The center has not pre-leased the space but anticipates drawing business tenants upon the facility’s completion. This is the second large distribution center under construction in Deer Park, which means more employment opportunities close to home, Westbeld said. The project is expected to be finished in March, she said.

ExperTox has expanded to add an additional 1,564 square feet and now incorporates the entire building at 1430 Center St. (the former location of Murphy’s Deli). The forensic toxicology laboratory started at Baylor College of Medicine and moved to Deer Park in 2000. Its first major project was testing women with breast implants who became ill for no apparent reason. ExperTox’s study indicated these women were afflicted with platinum poisoning caused when platinum leached out of implants in a transformed, oxidized state.

The findings were published by the FDA and reported in the Washington Post in 2006. The result was more stringent implant product disclosures, according to ExperTox’s website.

The lab offers services including drug tests, poison and toxin tests and industry exposure tests. ExperTox’s honors include the the Business Excellence Award from the Associated Builders & Contractors. For more information, visit expertox.com.

Two businesses will relocate to Deer Park:

· Laborde Products, Inc. will soon relocate its office from Miller Road in Houston to 313 Deerwood Glen Drive in the Deerwood Glen Business Park near Texas 225 and Railroad Avenue. This provider of heavy-duty engines, equipment, service and support will bring 12 new employees to this new location when it is completed early next year.

· ALA Maverick will relocate its corporate office from La Porte to the Deerwood Glen Business Park. Maverick is a full-spectrum, independent testing laboratory with a comprehensive range of metallurgical and mechanical testing services. The company is expected to move in early 2019, bringing 30 new employees.
