AMHERST, Mass. (AP) _ Massachusetts converted fumble recoveries into its first two touchdown drives and went on to beat Holy Cross 51-0 for its first victory of the season Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Holy Cross (0-2) fumbled a UMass punt following the first series of the game and the Minutemen (1-1) drove 70 yards in 12 plays to open the scoring. Rene Ingoglia ran for the TD from the 3.

Following a second Holy Cross punt fumble, UMass needed only four plays to cover 26 yards for the score. Jim Pizano ran it in from the 13 at the start of the second quarter

UMass made it 22-0 at halftime on a 31-yard field goal by Eric Oke and a 33-yard touchdown pass from Vito Campanile to wide receiver Kevin Bourgoin.

In the second half, UMass scored on a 6-yard run by Ingoglia, an 84-yard run by Frank Alessio, a 35-yard run by backup quarterback Anthony Catterton and a 4-yard run by Matt Jordan. Alessio had 153 yards rushing and Ingoglia ended with 106 yards on the ground.

UMass gained 414 yards on the ground. Holy Cross was held to 84.
