Cal State Fullerton 16, Harvard 1

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Steve Chatham and Ryan Owens each hit three-run homers for Cal State Fullerton on Thursday to lead the Titans to a 16-1 victory over Harvard in the first round of the NCAA South II Regional.

Second-seeded Cal State Fullerton had a season-high 20 hits.

The Titans (45-15) scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning, then racked up 12 runs in its final four at-bats.

Cal State is the only team besides LSU to win a regional tournament at Alex Box Stadium. Greg Jacobs hit a two-run homer and also had a second-inning RBI single.

Harvard (34-11), the Ivy League champions, got its only run on an eighth-inning single by Brian Ralph, scoring Hal Carey.

Titan reliever Marco Hanlon (5-2) pitched three innings for the victory. Starter Jon Smith, making his first start since March 7, worked four scoreless innings, allowing two hits.

Starter Garrett Vail (5-3), the first of six Harvard pitchers, took the loss.

Fullerton advances in the winner’s bracket to face Tulane, an 11-5 winner over Southwestern Louisiana in the first game of the day.

Top-seeded LSU faced Nicholls State in the other first-round game later Thursday.
