New video shows sparks flying in Boston’s June derailment
BOSTON (AP) — Newly released video shows the moment when a Boston subway car derailed at an above-ground stop, damaging the train, tracks and signals.
The Red Line train can be seen approaching the JFK/UMass stop on June 11 when sparks start to fly and bursts of light can be seen as rears car are jostled about. One car can be seen leaning to its side as the train comes to a stop.
The video from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority shows the derailment from several angles. The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
Signal restoration is expected to be completed by Aug. 15, when normal service will resume. The work, being conducted seven days a week, is expected to ultimately improve the speed on Red Line trips by five minutes.
