Tiverton Town Council votes to request casino referendum
TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) — The town council of Tiverton has voted to request that the General Assembly includes the Twin River casino referendum on Rhode Island’s November 2016 ballot.
The 6-1 vote on Monday came during a meeting to address the proposal by Twin River Management Group to move their gambling license from the Newport Grand slots parlor to Tiverton.
The proposal calls for the construction of an 85,000-square-foot casino, complete with 32 table games, which would be attached to an 84-room hotel.
Twin River consultants say Rhode Island could receive between $49 million and $75 million in revenue annually from a Tiverton casino.
If the proposal is approved, Tiverton would receive a minimum of $4 million annually in gambling revenue as well as real estate and other taxes.
