Man Charged in Machete Attack on School

July 12, 1996

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) _ A 32-year-old man accused of a machete attack on a school tea party has been charged with seven counts of attempted murder.

Horrett Irving Campbell was arrested Tuesday, the day of the attack at St. Luke’s Church of England school, which injured three children and four adults.

He was found hiding in a closet in a nearby apartment building 30 hours later.

The three injured children and one adult, a 21-year-old nurse, remain hospitalized in this city in central England.

Police said school staff reported hearing a loud argument between a man and a woman outside the school at about 3:15 p.m.

A man then vaulted over a four-foot high red brick wall, crossed a grass strip about four yards wide and came over a wooden fence about a yard higher.

The nurse, Lisa Potts, who suffered a broken arm and multiple cuts, said the attacker was laughing when he struck.

No motive has been suggested. The charges were filed Thursday.

The attack, less than four months after a gunman shot and killed 16 children and their teacher in Dunblane, Scotland, brought more calls for increased school security.
