Handegard leads PBA event
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) _ John Handegard held a 1-pin lead after the first round of the Professional Bowlers Association’s Showboat PBA Northwest Senior Classic on Monday at Valley Lanes.
Handegard, the reigning PBA Player of the Year, had high games of 269 and 268 to help boost him past Les Shearer. Handegard, the most prolific senior champion with 13 senior titles, is looking for his second victory of the year. He averaged 240 and dropped 2,163 pins.
Shearer, a relative unknown, is looking to make the first championship round appearance of his career. He has a total pinfall of 2,162.
Ron Winger was in third. Winger has already made one championship round appearance this year and has thus far knocked down 2,155 pins.
Rounding out the top five are Bill Godwin and Roger Workman. The two non-titlists felled 2,126 and 2,118 pins.
The final block of qualifying is Tuesday, after which the first cut is made to the top 24. Those 24 then compete in three rounds of match play before the final cut is made to the top five.
Those remaining bowlers then compete Thursday at 10:30 p.m. EDT in a tape-delayed telecast. The show will air July 8 at 10:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN2.
