Herd men’s soccer slate announced
HUNTINGTON — Marshall University men’s soccer has a 2019 schedule featuring seven home matches through September and the first week of October.
The stretch of games on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex includes Butler (Sept. 6), East Tennessee State (Sept. 10), South Carolina (Sept. 14), Texas Rio Grande Valley (Sept. 17), Akron (Sept. 21), Dayton (Oct. 1) and UAB (Oct. 5).
Akron lost to Maryland, 1-0, in the 2018 NCAA College Cup national championship match.
“We have some big teams visiting us, but hopefully, with the help of our amazing student support section, we can make Veterans Memorial a fortress in 2019,” Thundering Herd head coach Chris Grassie said
in a HerdZone.com release. “If we can do that, we should be in a great position to go into the business end of the season.”
Marshall is looking to build on 2018, an 8-9-3 season during which the Herd advanced to the Conference USA Tournament semifinals.
Exhibition matches are Aug. 18 against WVU Tech and Aug. 23 at UNC Asheville. The Herd opens the season away from home Aug. 30 at Purdue Fort Wayne and Sept. 2 at Northern Kentucky.
The second half of the season includes six consecutive road matches at Charlotte (Oct. 12), Loyola Marymount (Oct. 15), San Diego State (Oct. 18), Wright State (Oct. 22), Florida Atlantic (Oct. 26) and Oakland (Oct. 29).
“In the second half of our season, we will have to become road warriors,” Grassie said. “We play six matches in a row on the road and that will define our season. But we are looking no further ahead than our opening weekend trip.
“I wish it was August already.”
Kentucky, the defending C-USA regular season and tournament champion, visits Marshall on Nov. 3.
The C-USA Tournament is Nov. 13-17 at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia.
