Lady O comes up short against Northwest

February 9, 2019

The Beatrice girls basketball team lost their regular season finale to Northwest Friday night.

The Lady O fell to Class B No. 4 Northwest 38-29 at the Ozone, dropping their record to 9-10 on the season.

Beatrice scored just three points in the first quarter. Olivia Aden answered Northwest’s opening basket with a three pointer, but Northwest would finish the quarter on a 10-0 run to make it 12-3 after one.

Northwest extended their lead to 14-3 at the beginning of the second quarter before Carley Leners finally ended the run with a three pointer to make it 14-6.

After another basket by Northwest, Hannah Lytle connected from long range to make it 16-9.

Northwest immediately answered with a three pointer of their own. After two free throws by Addie Barnard, Northwest would beat the buzzer with a deep three pointer to make it 22-11 at half time.

Mak Hatcliff opened the third quarter with a basket, but Northwest answered with a basket. Leners scored three of the game’s next five points to make it 26-16.

Northwest extended their lead to 12, but Beatrice ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 28-23 entering the fourth. Leners and Barnard hit free throws to start the run and Barnard then finished the run with five straight points.

Hatcliff opened the fourth quarter with a basket to cut the Lady O deficit to three, but the Lady Vikings came back with five straight points to make it 33-25.

Leners scored four of the game’s next six points in the post to make it 35-29, but that would be the last basket of the game for Beatrice. Northwest would hold on to win 38-29.

Leners, returning from an ankle injury, led the Lady O with 10 points while Barnard had eight points, Lytle and Hatcliff had four points each and Aden had three points each.

The loss hinders Beatrice’s chances of making a district final game. Entering the game, the Lady O was just outside the top 16 in Class B power points.

Beatrice is the fourth seed in the B-4 Subdistrict, which starts Monday night in Seward. The Lady O will play top-seeded Seward at 6 p.m. on Monday.

With a win, Beatrice would play in the subdistrict final Tuesday night against the winner of Monday’s late game between third-seeded Norris and second-seeded Crete.

The eight subdistrict winners along with the next best eight teams in power points will be seeded and matched up in district finals games.

The winners of those eight games will advance to the Class B State Tournament in Lincoln.
