Looking for bargains?

You might want to head to the new Dollar Tree on Aiken’s Northside.

The store, part of a chain that traditionally has sold items for a $1 or less, opened at 590 Rutland Drive on May 4 and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony then.

The official grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Some special activities are planned, said Store Manager Lisa Barwick.

There are two other Dollar Trees in Aiken, one at 161 South Aiken Lane in the Shoppes at Whiskey and one at 3553 Richland Avenue West in the Shoppes at Richland.

The new Dollar Tree is on a lot on the corner of Laurens Street and Rutland that is near Aiken High School and not far from Exit 18 on Interstate 20. A Sprint Foods convenience store will be opening later this year at the same plaza.

Site plans submitted to the City of Aiken earlier this year identified WTS of Rutland LLC as the developer of a retail hub on the property.

“It’s a good location because this is a very busy area,” Barwick said. “We get school kids coming in and people traveling to and from Augusta.”

Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

“We cater to early morning commuters, so we have a Snack Zone section,” Barwick said.

Dollar Tree Inc. is a discount retailer based in Chesapeake, Virginia that has thousands of variety stores.

USA Today and other media outlets reported in March that Dollar Tree Inc. has plans to test offering items that cost more than a buck at some of its namesake retail establishments.

Such testing has been done in the past.
