Vermont GOP Gov. Scott undecided on abortion rights bill

May 16, 2019

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott, who supports abortion rights, says he hasn’t decided yet whether he will sign a bill passed by the state Legislature that protects a woman’s access to abortion services.

The House recently gave final approval to a bill that writes into state law the right for a woman to receive an abortion.

The legislation is separate from a proposal to amend the state constitution to guarantee a woman’s right to an abortion.

Proponents of both measures they say they are needed in the event the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe V. Wade, the case that legalized abortion across the country.

Scott says he supports a woman’s right to choose, but he wants to read the House bill that he says is “very emotional for some.”
