Three Jail Guards Indicted in Videotaped Prisoner Beating
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) _ Three former jail guards have been indicted on federal charges they beat a handcuffed prisoner in an attack captured on video by a jail security camera.
Donald Adkins Jr., Fred S. Beane III and Michael P. Dalporto were charged with depriving a prisoner of his civil rights, U.S. Attorney Michael Carey said Wednesday.
The May 3 videotape shows Charles Prater, 18, being punched in the face four times at the Kanawha County Jail, the sheriff’s department said. Prater also was struck three or four times after he was put in his cell, the department said.
He was treated at a hospital for bruises.
Charges against him, including public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, were later dropped.
Adkins, Beane and Dalporto have denied wrongdoing. They were among seven jailers fired after an internal review.
