Hungarian Gymnast Takes Scary Fall
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Hungary’s only Olympic female gymnast fell off the uneven bars and landed on the mat in a crumpled heap, sending a scare throughout the SuperDome on Sunday.
Adrienn Nyeste was shaken by the fall, but otherwise uninjured, according to Dr. Eva Martos, the team doctor, who said the gymnast would be examined again later. Nyeste skipped her last event.
Nyeste, who lists the bars as her favorite event, was getting ready to do her dismount during the preliminary competition. After a couple of full-body swings to build momentum, she put her feet on the bars so she could launch herself into the air.
But her fingers slipped and, with her body already below the higher bar, she went hurtling face-first toward the ground. She broke her fall with her knees, but her chest and head still slammed into a solid mat that is beyond the softer landing area. The crowd gasped as she hit the ground.
Nyeste lay still for several minutes, her arms at awkward angles. Her coach and trainers rushed onto the floor, and she finally sat up a few minutes later.
The crowd applauded and she gave a weak wave.
