Journalist Killed in Uzbekistan

February 9, 1996

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) _ Uzbek authorities have found the body of a missing Russian news agency correspondent, the agency said Friday.

Interfax said the body of Sergei Grebenyuk was found in a canal in the Uzbek capital Tashkent on Thursday.

Grebenyuk, 41, had covered Uzbekistan for Interfax since 1992. He was last seen alive on Jan. 27 in his brother’s house near the place where his body was found.

The Uzbek Interior Ministry said the exact cause of his death hadn’t been established yet.

Interfax, Russia’s leading independent news agency, also did not release any further details and declined comment on Grebenyuk’s relations with Uzbek authorities or his possible enemies.

Uzbekistan’s human-rights record has been marred by its efforts to eradicate political opposition and frequent attacks on the foreign media.
