German Shepherd Dies After Being Buried Alive For Two Days
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A German shepherd was found buried alive here with only its head above ground and the mayor said whoever did it deserved a similar fate.
The 9-year-old dog died in surgery after it was freed Tuesday, done in by the ordeal. Veterinarians determined it had been trapped in dirt and debris at least two days and given birth within the past two months.
Pet lovers reacted angrily Wednesday.
Mayor Vincent Cianci Jr. called the perpetrators ″depraved″ and said they should be buried alive.
Radio and television stations were flooded with telephone calls from people eager to contribute to a fund to catch those responsible.
By early Wednesday afternoon authorities had received numerous tips, said Mike DiSano, an animal control officer. Police were investigating and searching for the puppies.
Conviction for cruelty to animals is a felony and is punishable by a year in jail and a $500 fine, DiSano said.
