Southern U. 103, Grambling St. 86

MONROE, La. (AP) _ Tim Roberts scored 30 points for Southern and his teammates held Grambling’s lead scorer to a season-low eight for a 103-86 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory Saturday at the Monroe Civic Center.

Kenny Sykes had averaged 24.5 points a game for Grambling (7-13 overall, 2-6 SWAC) before Saturday.

Ronnell Williams had 25 points for Southern (9-7 overall, 4-4 SWAC). Mitch Taylor added 21, Hassan Sanders 15 and Luther Dilworth 10.

Grambling took a few early leads, but Southern led 53-47 at the half and the Tigers never quite caught up. An 8-0 run put Southern ahead 61-49 with 17:06 to play.

Grambling pulled up to 70-69 with 10:07 to play on a 3-pointer by Coleman, but Southern then hit six points in a row.

Claude Coleman came off the bench to lead Grambling with 23 points, including four 3-pointers. Tommy McGhee had 22 points, Michael Tardy 15 and a game-high 19 rebounds, and Jay Mosely 10 points.
