Pirates beat Demons for first victory
WATERLOO — Senior guard Aaron Brey scored 19 of his season-high 30 points in the second half as Waterloo’s boys basketball team earned its first victory of the season with a 76-67 nonconference win over Deerfield on Thursday.
Waterloo (1-8) pulled away down the stretch and shot 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final 90 seconds to seal the first victory. Junior forward Chase Bostwick added 18 points and senior point guard Spencer Noel added 15 for the Pirates.
“Losing hasn’t affected this group in practice,” Waterloo boys basketball coach Bryan Setz said. “They have been focused on how we prepare. Practices have been good and intense to prepare us for games like tonight. There was a lot of excitement. It’s a semi-rivalry. We see them every year. It got chippy at times, but they battled through it down the stretch like we expect them to.”
Wills Manning scored 22 points and Carson Knapp added 16 to lead Deerfield (3-4).
“We played a heck of a game defensively,” Setz said. “We used a three-quarter court trap and went into a two front zone. We ran to their shooters well. We knew Manning and Knapp could shoot it. We were running them off the 3-point line and contested a lot of stuff to keep their shooting percentages down. We rebounded well when we needed to.
