Spain withdraws from mixed Euros over image rights dispute
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Spain with badminton world champion Carolina Marin has withdrawn from the European mixed team championship because of a dispute between some of its players over revenues from image rights.
The Spanish badminton federation says on its website that the decision was taken “due to a disagreement with several players” over a change to federation rules made last month regarding the division of potential revenues from image rights.
Federation spokesman Jaime Gomez tells The Associated Press it “has been looking for a solution and remains open to proposals” from the players.
The tournament in Leuven, Belgium, begins on Wednesday.
