MANCHESTER, Vt. (AP) — An annual cycling competition will have an additional challenge this year: a climb up Mount Equinox in Manchester.

Dozens of bicyclists will ride 56 miles as part of the Vermont Challenge on Sunday and then the last 5.3 miles will be up a road from the base of the mountain nearly 3,200 feet to the summit.

There will also be a Mount Equinox climb time trial. The Bennington Banner reports that many riders are expected to compete only in that.

Organizers say it's the only bicycle mountain climb event in Vermont. A similar race up Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeast, happened Saturday.
