GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) _ Smoking will be banned in seating areas during Green Bay Packers games at Lambeau Field starting with the opening preseason game.

Team president Bob Harlan said Monday the ban also would be honored for games played at Milwaukee County Stadium, although the Milwaukee Brewers do not have a no-smoking policy for their stadium games.

″The decision not to allow smoking in the stadium has been made in response to a number of complaints from fans who either have been the victim of burns in their clothes from sparks off a cigarette or who find smoke offensive, particularly when they are in a confined situation and have no way to escape it,″ Harlan said.

″We also are sensitive to the results of medical studies which have established that secondary smoke is injurious to the health of non-smokers as well as that of smokers.″

MONTREAL (AP) - Jim Fanning, a former general manager and manager of the Montreal Expos, is leaving the organization after working for the club since it entered the National League in 1968.

The Expos announced Monday that they were terminating their working relationship with Fanning because the two sides couldn’t agree on the terms of his employment as a special consultant for the 1993 season.

Fanning, 65, expects to hook on with another team as a special assignment scout at Expos’ home games.

″I was going to be doing the same work in my new job description but travelling much, much less and I wanted to be more involved,″ Fanning said. ″It’s been a fantastic 24 1/2 years. It would have been nice to finish out the 25 seasons.″

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Central Florida, which began its football program 14 years ago, announced plans to move up to NCAA Division I-A level in 1996.

″Just as a great city needs a great university, a big-league city like Orlando should have a big-league college football program,″ school president John Hitt said Monday.

The decision to upgrade from Division I-AA, where the Knights have competed since 1990, was based on a recommendation from a campus committee studying the school’s overall athletic program.
