Jacksonville St. 46, New Haven 35

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) _ Danny Lee scored four touchdowns - including an 82-yard punt return and a 90-yard pass - as Jacksonville State handed New Haven it only loss, 46-35 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday.

But his 39-yard run with less than five minutes remaining overcame a 35-34 deficit. He rushed for 119 yards.

The Gamecocks (11-1-1) will play in the championship game next Saturday in Florence against the winner of the Portland State-Pittsburg State game. New Haven ends its season at 12-1.

Lee opened the scoring in the second quarter with the punt-return TD. Two minutes later, Sean Richardson scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 1-yard run.

Midway through the period, JSU’s Chuck Robinson threw Lee the long scoring pass.

Then New Haven quarterback Ken Suhl then capped a 77-yard, 13-play drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Max Joyner-Brown.

Just before the half, Roger Graham - who gained 191 yards - cut the JSU lead to 21-14 by running 11 for a touchdown. He also scored on a 9-yard run to give New Haven its short-lived 35-34 lead with 5:34 left.

In the third period, JSU made it 28-14 on Richardson’s second 1-yard scoring run, but Suhl connected with Tony Willis on a 13-yard TD pass to narrow the lead again.

New Haven tied the score at when Suhl threw a 12-yard TD pass to Joyner- Brown. But the latter’s muff of punt gave JSU the ball at the Charger 13, and Lee ran in from there to make it 34-28.

Richardson ran 35 yards for the final touchdown.
