2 police officers, 2 suspects injured in Florida shooting

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Two police officers were injured in a shooting involving two men outside an apartment complex in Florida.

Sarasota police said the officers were on routine patrol early Tuesday when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. As they approached the vehicle, the driver fled, hitting Officer Brandon Vermillion. He fired at the vehicle.

Sarasota police spokeswoman Genevieve Judge said in a news release that two of the three occupants received injuries that weren’t life threatening. The driver went to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Officers Brandon Vermillion and Jonathan Torres were also taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.

Judge said Vermillion is on paid administrative pending an investigation.

The 18-year-old driver has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer.
