Prisoner Hides in Garbage Barrel
SHARPES, Fla. (AP) _ He may have looked like a jogger, but he certainly didn’t smell like one, police said after recapturing a jail escapee.
Wesley Marvin Springs, 27, had stripped down to his shorts and T-shirt in a shopping plaza after jumping out of a barrel of garbage that had been placed on a truck at the Brevard County jail Wednesday.
The prisoner was trying ″to look like a jogger,″ said Assistant Prison Superintendent Ray McCleese. ″But anyone who had gotten near him would have known he was doing something other than jogging.″
McCleese said Springs was working in the prison kitchen when several barrels were filled with garbage and loaded on a truck. The truck then stopped at the shopping plaza in nearby Port St. John. The driver, Margaret Johns, saw a man in prison clothes climb from a barrel.
She called authorities, and Springs was arrested behind a supermarket at the shopping center. He had been free for about 30 minutes.
Springs, serving a nine-year sentence for burglary, grand theft and armed robbery, now faces escape charges.
