D.C. United Defeats Galaxy 1-0
CARSON, Calif. (AP) _ Freddy Adu scored during second-half injury time to give D.C. United a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.
D.C. United (8-6-5) extended its unbeaten streak to four games against league and U.S. Open Cup opponents and handed Los Angeles (8-7-4) its first home loss in 11 league games.
Adu scored his second goal of the season after Brandon Prideaux won a header from the Galaxy’s Michael Enfield at midfield.
Adu took the ball, dribbled, and kicked a rising 22-yard shot that deflected off defender Tyrone Marshall and settled in the upper-left corner of the net.
United goalkeeper Nick Rimando made two saves for his eighth shutout. Rimando blocked Guillermo Ramirez’s 7-yard shot along the left-wing end line in the 33rd minute and caught Joseph Ngwenya’s 2-yard shot in the 88th minute.
Los Angeles played without Landon Donovan and Jovan Kirovski, who have combined for 10 of the Galaxy’s 24 goals this year.
Donovan was playing for the United States in Saturday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Kirovski was suspended for a reckless foul on Chivas USA defender Armando Begines on July 16.
D.C. United’s Ben Olsen and Santino Quaranta also are on the U.S. roster for the Gold Cup.
The Galaxy is winless in seven of eight MLS games.
