Stabbing suspect in custody in Providence after standoff
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A man wanted in a fatal stabbing in Providence is now in custody after a standoff with police.
Nathan Spardello was seen being taken on a stretcher out of an apartment building in the city’s Federal Hill neighborhood early Tuesday. The 28-year-old Spardello is wanted in connection with the death of a 46-year-old man who was stabbed multiple times Monday night.
Maj. Michael Correia told WPRI-TV that Spardello’s father lives in the building, but he broke into a different unit and held the tenant hostage. That lasted for about four hours, until police burst into the unit and used a stun gun to subdue him.
The dead man’s name has not been released.
Police said that earlier Monday, Spardello had attacked his wife, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
