LOCAL COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Wilkes Tennis Continues Conference Domination
Wilkes men’s tennis extended its dominant run in the MAC Freedom to 12 conference titles in a row after a 5-1 victory over Manhattanville. Chris Maderitz was named tournament MVP. He scored an 8-1 doubles winner with Jonathan White and rallied back at No. 2 singles for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. Wilkes women shut out DeSales, 5-0, to win its 13th consecutive MAC Freedom title and advance to the NCAA tournament. Jordan Vasarkovy was named tournament MVP after she teamed up with Dasha Yakhnis for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and also won, 6-1, 6-1, in singles action.
Misericordia baseball is one win away from a conference championship.
The Cougars defeated DeSales, 10-2, to advance to today’s final day of the MAC Freedom Championships at Owls Field in West Lawn.
No. 1 Misericordia will play for the Freedom title at noon against the winner of Saturday night’s game between No. 2 Manhattanville and No. 3 DeSales. If a second game is necessary, it’ll be played at 3.
The MAC Freedom winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Misericordia is playing for that right after winning pitcher Tom Jacob limited DeSales to six hits and two runs, while striking out six in six innings.
Tyler Holzapfel got the Cougars on the board with a two-run homer and made it 4-0 in the third with a sacrifice fly. Brady Madden also had three RBIs before relievers Kyle Melahn and Zach Mason pitched three shutout innings.
Misericordia kept its postseason alive with a 3-1 win over Wilkes before falling in the MAC Freedom championship game, 6-3, to Manhattanville. In the title game, the Cougars rallied for three runs during their final turn at the plate but left the bases loaded. Kiersten Pflueger hit a two-RBI single, and Brooke Moyle drove in another run. Misericordia started its day with a homer by Ciara DeLong and RBI hits by Pflueger and Jessie McDonough in its win over Wilkes. Britny Jumalon drove home the Colonels’ lone run.
