ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ Top-seeded Patrick Rafter moved into the quarterfinals of the ABN AMRO indoor tournament Wednesday by beating Davide Scala of Italy 6-3, 6-4.

Rafter had no problems against Scala, who was admitted to the tournament as a lucky loser after eighth-seeded Marc Rosset dropped out due to illness.

Earlier, Johan van Herck upset sixth-seeded Sergi Bruguera 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in a second-round match.

After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Bruguera won only three games in the second set against Van Herck, a Belgian who is ranked 81st in the world.

In first-round matches, Richey Reneberg beat Tomas Nydahl of Sweden 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and two Dutchmen lost before their home crowd.

Paul Haarhuis was beaten by Adrian Voinea of Romania 6-3, 6-4 and Raemon Sluiter fell to Brett Steven of New Zealand 6-3, 7-5.
